Changes to the network for the Fall of 2007...
- The disk image on all laboratory computers has been replaced,
including an upgrade to Firefox 2.0, Open Office 2.0, and Java
6.
- The default graphical environment in this new installation is
Gnome rather than KDE. KDE remains installed, but KDE's audio
support isn't compatible with the latest updates to CentOS.
(Ubuntu uses Gnome as the default also, so those who use Ubuntu
on their own computers will find it familiar.)
- External access to SSH and SFTP is restricted to a single computer,
Circe. (This isn't enabled yet, but it will be soon.) This is a
security measure: People from off campus are trying to break
into all computers via SSH by guessing passwords.
- The department Web page (ozark.hendrix.edu) was revamped at the
summer's beginning.
- Several nice big monitors are available for the lab. They will
be installed soon.
- We had a closet installed in the machine room for the servers.
This will allow us to keep the room open to student use during
the day (after we manage to clean it up). We hope to install
some additional computers in this room for times when the
other lab is nearly full, and we hope to use it for specialized
projects, such as robotics projects in AI.
- We're no longer supporting the wireless network, since Hendrix
has now installed a campus-wide wireless network.
