2010 Linux Network Updates

Changes to the department's computing facilities in 2010...

  • We got all new computers for the student Linux stations! The most up-to-date Ubuntu distribution (Lucid Lynx) was installed on these computers.

  • The configuration of computers in the Linux lab was changed: The aisle closest to the Windows lab now has two working computers. (There was no increase in the total number of computers - they were just spread out to use this aisle.)

  • In May, we got two more of those 24" wide-screen monitors, so now all 14 computers have a large LCD screen - including five of these 24" wide-screens. What's more, those gigantic 21" CRT screens have finally been removed.

  • All computers in the Windows laboratory were changed to run Windows 7.

  • The computers in the robotics lab (MCAcx 118) were replaced by the previous computers from the Linux lab. This represents a dramatic improvement over the cast-off computers previously in that lab. These computers now have an IT-managed Windows setup similar to the one used in MCRey 312.

  • The servers Ozark and Gilgamesh were both replaced. Now all of our servers are less than five years old.
