Research conferences

The department has a very long tradition of taking groups of students to mathematical conferences. The most regular is the Hendrix-Rhodes-Sewanee Undergraduate Symposium (HRS), which occurs each spring involving students from Hendrix College, Rhodes College, and Sewanee (University of the South). We host HRS at Hendrix once every four years, and we take students to Rhodes or Sewanee.

We run a problem solving seminar that meets on alternate Wednesday afternoons to discuss how to solve challenging mathematical problems, of the sort that are found in the Putnam Mathematical Competition.

The Putnam Mathematical Competition is a very rigorous national mathematics exam held annually, and Hendrix acts as a site for the exam each fall. Our students also participate in the Virginia Tech Regional Mathematics Contest and the team-based Arkansas Undergraduate Mathematics Competition. Our students regularly place at the top of the Oklahoma-Arkansas region [Records], and a Hendrix team has won the Arkansas contest for every year from 2006 to 2012.
