Summer Research for 1996

What is an REU? An REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) is a summer program in which students (normally juniors) can perform research in topics that are normally outside of the scope of most college classes. The student must apply for a position, and there are normally only 8 - 12 positions at most REU's. REU's generally last around two months, are are funded by an NSF grant. The student receives a stipend, and often room and board. Access to libraries and computer facilities are also offered. The student gets an chance to perform in-depth research with a professor or other expert in the field of the REU. Most REU's end with a presentation session, and there are always possibilities of obtaining publishable material from the research.

Hendrix has traditionally had excellent success placing students in mathematics REU's, especially considering that our mathematics department only has 3 - 6 eligible students every year. In the past, Hendrix mathematics students have participated in REU's at Oklahoma State University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, The Geometry Center, and Cornell University.

Junior Jac Cole has been accepted to the Mathematics REU Program at the University of Oklahoma. There will be three topics of research, in the fields of analysis, geometric probability, and algebraic topology. For more information check out the University of Oklahoma's REU web site.

Senior mathematics major and junior biology major Jen Powell will be participating in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She will be doing research in biochemistry under the supervision of Sandra Hofmann, Md, PhD.

Goldwater Scholarship

Junior Jac Cole also received a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for 1996-1997. The Goldwater Scholarship is a $7,000 scholarship for engineering, mathematics, and natural sciences. Jac's proposal for research had to do with finding elliptic curves in polynominals of order higher than 3.

Putnam Examination

Senior mathematics major and junior biology major Jen Powell was the top participant in Arkansas in the 56th annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition on December 2, 1995. There were 2468 students from 405 institutions taking the exam. She placed in the top 513 contestants nationwide.

Mathematical Contest in Modeling

Two teams from Hendrix participated in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling this February. The team consisting of Donna Sword, Jen Powell, and David Lee received a National Honorable Mention certificate. This contest took a lot of hard work (as well as an entire weekend), in addition to inspiring a research project for David.

National Conference on Undergraduate Research

Donna Sword and Jen Powell presented their research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Ashville, North Carolina on April 18 - 20. Jen presented Writing Hypertext Laboratory Exercises for Mathematics Classes, and Donna spoke on Images and Inverse Images of the Line Graph Operator.
