Hendrix College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant
professor position in mathematics beginning in August 2010. A Ph.D. in
the mathematical sciences is required; candidates from all specialties
are welcome. Applications should include a letter
addressing the candidate's interest in teaching in a liberal arts
environment, a curriculum vitae, statements of teaching
philosophy and research interests, transcripts for all undergraduate
and graduate work, and at least three letters of recommendation.
These letters should include the phone numbers and email addresses of
the referees, and at least one letter should directly address teaching.
Mail applications to:

Mathematics Search Committee
Hendrix College
1600 Washington Avenue
Conway, AR 72032
Evaluation of the applications will begin January 19, 2010, and will
continue until the position is filled. Applications received by
December 7, 2009, will be considered for preliminary interviews at
the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Francisco, January
13–16.
Responsibilities include teaching a broad spectrum of courses at
all levels of the curriculum, active involvement in scholarly work,
and directing undergraduate research. While all specialties will
receive consideration, the ideal candidate will be comfortable
teaching a Statistics service course, an upper-division Analysis
course, and/or the Probability & Statistics course for advanced
mathematics majors. The annual teaching schedule is six mathematics
courses across two semesters, which typically includes two courses
beyond the calculus sequence. A typical introductory class (either
service course or calculus) has 25 to 35 students, while a typical
course at the sophomore level or above has five to ten students.
The emphasis at Hendrix is on excellence in teaching undergraduates;
still, faculty are expected to be actively involved in scholarly work.
This department has a long history of encouraging undergraduate
research; we require each senior to complete a project, which
provides an opportunity to involve our students in research.
All department faculty are expected to be available as advisors for
senior projects.

The department occupies the third floor of Reynolds Hall.
The department includes 7.5 full-time faculty positions, including
four working primarily in mathematics, two primarily in computer
science, and one who teaches both; the half-position is a mathematician
who works primarily in college administration. The mathematics program
graduates an average of five majors each year. The college has a Pi
Mu Epsilon and student MAA chapter. Students frequently participate
in mathematics contests and present undergraduate research results
at the regional MAA meeting as well as the annual
Hendrix-Rhodes-Sewanee Mathematics and Computer Science
Symposium.
