Dear Colleagues,

Today a letter from President Cloyd indicating your salary for next year will be mailed to you at your home address. For those of you who are new, I want to explain the process of arriving at salary increases as fully as I can; and for everyone, I want to explain how the raises were determined this year.

First, the Area Chairs evaluate the performance of each faculty member in his or her respective area for the year. On the basis of that evaluation, I make a relative weighting based on the total amount of money available for raises, an amount set by the Board of Trustees. I then take the evaluations and the recommended increases to the President for his approval, prior to the preparation of the letters.

This year, the normative raise, the one given to most faculty in recognition of consistently fine work, was 3.5%. A few were given less, some more, based on the Area Chairs? evaluations. Also a small increment beyond the percentage raise was added to those who were promoted this year.

In addition, the Board of Trustees provided an additional $70,000 beyond the original salary pool in order to continue to address the salary compression issue at Hendrix. Rather than being distributed equally across each rank, most of the additional amount this year went instead to raising the ?floor? for each rank.

If you have questions once you receive your letter, please feel free to take them up with your Area Chair or me.

I hope you have a restful and productive summer.
